Key Specifications
The NFC Forum maintains a comprehensive suite of specifications organized into several layers:
- Tag Type definitions (Types 1-5): Define the memory layout, command set, and protocol mapping for each tag category. Type 2 (based on ISO 14443 A) is the most widely deployed, covering the NTAG family. Type 5 (based on ISO 15693) extends NFC to vicinity-range applications.
- NDEF (NFC Data Exchange Format): The standardized data container format for storing records on tags and exchanging data between devices.
- Operating modes: Reader/writer, card emulation, and peer-to-peer — the three fundamental interaction patterns for NFC-enabled devices.
- Connection Handover: Specifications for using NFC to negotiate and establish connections over higher-bandwidth carriers like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Certification Programs
The NFC Forum operates two certification tracks:
- NFC Forum Certification: Validates that devices and tags comply with NFC Forum specifications for interoperability. Products passing certification may display the N-Mark logo.
- Tag Certification: Ensures tag ICs and finished tags meet the electrical and protocol requirements for their declared tag type.
