Form Factor
The physical shape and packaging of an NFC tag product: stickers (circles, rectangles), cards (ISO card, key fob), wristbands, tokens, labels, or embedded modules. Form factor affects read range, durability, and cost.
What Is Form Factor?
In the NFC industry, form factor refers to the physical shape, size, packaging, and mechanical construction of a finished NFC tag product. While the underlying technology — an NFC chip bonded to an NFC antenna — is the same across form factors, the external packaging determines durability, mountability, read range, cost, and suitability for specific environments.
Common NFC Form Factors
| Form Factor | Size | Durability | Cost | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sticker (round) | 25-30 mm | Low | $0.10-$0.30 | Consumer products |
| PVC card | 85.6 x 54 mm | High | $0.30-$1.50 | Access control, transit |
| Key fob | 30-45 mm | Very high | $0.50-$2.00 | Gym, hotel access |
| Silicone wristband | Adjustable | Very high | $1.00-$3.00 | Events, fitness |
| Tyvek wristband | One-size | Low | $0.20-$0.60 | Single-day events |
| Epoxy token | 30-50 mm | Extreme | $0.80-$2.50 | Industrial, laundry |
| On-metal tag | 25-50 mm | High | $0.50-$1.50 | Metal asset tracking |
| Glass capsule | 2 x 12 mm | Extreme | $2.00-$10.00 | Animal ID |
How Form Factor Affects Performance
- Antenna area: Larger form factors allow larger antennas and better read range.
- Metal compatibility: On-metal variants incorporate a ferrite absorber layer.
- Environmental resilience: Epoxy tokens withstand -40 to +200 degrees Celsius and chemical exposure. Paper stickers degrade in moisture.
- Antenna orientation: Some form factors (key fobs, wristbands) orient antennas perpendicular to the tapping surface.
Selecting the Right Form Factor
Consider: mounting surface material (metal needs on-metal tags; curved surfaces need flexible inlays), environmental conditions (water, chemicals, heat, UV), user interaction design, lifecycle requirements (permanent vs disposable), and budget. For large-volume deployments (100,000+ units), custom form factors with optimized antenna dimensions are available.

자주 묻는 질문
The NFC glossary is a comprehensive reference of technical terms, acronyms, and concepts used in Near Field Communication technology. It is designed for developers, product managers, and engineers who work with NFC and need clear definitions of terms like NDEF, APDU, anti-collision, and ISO 14443.
Each glossary term is cross-referenced with related NFC chips, standards, and other terms. For example, the term 'AES-128' links to chips that support AES encryption (NTAG 424 DNA, DESFire EV2/EV3), and the term 'ISO 14443' links to all chips compliant with that standard.
Yes. NFCFYI provides glossary definitions in 15 languages including English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic, French, Russian, German, Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Thai. Use the language selector in the header to switch languages.
