NFC-V (Vicinity)

NFC-V is the NFC communication technology based on ISO 15693, extending NFC's reach from the typical 4 cm proximity range to vicinity distances of up to 1-1.5 meters. The NFC Forum mapped NFC-V to Type 5 tags, making it the bridge between short-range NFC interactions and longer-range RFID applications.

When read by a smartphone's NFC controller, NFC-V tags operate at the same short range as other NFC tags because smartphone antennas are optimized for proximity operation. The extended range only manifests with dedicated ISO 15693 readers that output higher field strength.

Type 5 Tag Chips

Popular NFC-V / Type 5 chips include:

  • ICODE SLIX2 (NXP): 2560 bits user memory, password protection, privacy mode, EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance). Widely used in library systems.
  • ICODE DNA (NXP): AES-128 encryption, untraceable mode, cryptographic authentication for supply chain security.
  • ST25TV (STMicroelectronics): Tamper detection, configurable kill and privacy passwords, NDEF support.
  • ST25DV (STMicroelectronics): Dual-interface (ISO 15693 + I2C) for IoT sensor nodes. The I2C interface allows a connected microcontroller to write data that an NFC reader retrieves wirelessly.

NFC-V's combination of longer range and NFC smartphone compatibility makes it suitable for several scenarios:

  • Library systems: Bulk checkout and anti-theft detection using longer-range readers.
  • Smart labeling: Product tags readable by both industrial ISO 15693 readers (at distance) and consumer smartphones (at touch range).
  • IoT sensor tags: Dual-interface chips like the ST25DV bridge wired sensor data to wireless NFC readout without batteries.
